Instagram Begins Testing “Take A Break” Feature

Nov 15, 2021 ByAndrew Parker

A few weeks ago, Instagram started testing a new feature that will motivate users to take a break from the application every now and then. The feature, ‘Take a Break’, calculates your screen time on Instagram and once they’ve reached a certain limit, sends a notification to advise users to close the application for a while. The feature is currently in its initial stages, but its goal is to help users cut down their excess time on Instagram by sending friendly reminders prompting them to take occasional healthy breaks.

The head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, stated in a tweet that this new feature is “part of the broader effort to try and give people more control over their experience of Instagram.”

Recently, the pressure on popular media apps to develop features that help people manage their use is high. With more and more research being conducted on the harm of over-using social media, Instagram has decided to act now by giving users a better sense of how much time they spend on the app and suggesting a break every now and then.

When you are in the middle of watching a video or reading an infographic, it may seem like a vibe kill to get a notification, but Instagram doesn’t leave you empty-handed. Mosseri mentioned in an Instagram post that these notifications will also include “expert-backed” tips on what to do during your social media break. Although the app does not automatically log you out after a certain amount of time, a simple recommendation and some inspiration for alternative activities can go a long way. In the Instagram post, Mosseri explained: “Supporting peoples’ well-being is a priority for us – and giving people ways to manage their time in a way that’s intentional and meaningful is one way we’re thinking about that.”
