Journaling To Improve Mental Health

Life can be tough. There are a lot of times in your life when things do not seem to be going your way and, as a result, stress levels shoot up. In moments like these, it is important that you wind down and make sense of all the racing thoughts that are clouding your head. The easiest way to do that is journaling. Write your thoughts down, it will help clear your thoughts out and provide you with a sense of clarity. 

Research has correlated journaling about your feelings to lower levels of mental distress. In a study, researchers found that journaling for only 15 minutes three days a week was helpful in reducing anxiety-related symptoms in those with pre-existing symptoms.  They continued to do this over a period of 12-weeks and noticed increased feelings of well-being and fewer depressive symptoms after one month. 

Journalling also helps create awareness about your own feelings and thoughts. Writing down your feelings is almost like saying them out loud, which helps you accept that they are actually there. This is an important step in making sense of these emotions. Moreover, once you have it all written down you will find it easier to maneuver yourself out of the difficult situation you are in. a difficult situation can help you understand it better.

Consequently, journaling plays a very important role in regulating emotions. This is not only concluded based on the subjective opinions of people who practice journaling regularly. Instead, brain scans of people who wrote about their feelings showed that they were able to control their emotions better than those who wrote about a neutral experience. Once you have your thoughts and emotions written down on paper, it is almost as if a weight is off your shoulders. And then, you instantly feel a sense of calm!
