Mariah Says The Dress Worn For Her Special "Hurt Like A Mother"

Dec 06, 2021 ByLaura Lee

Mariah Carey donned a dazzling golden gown for her new Apple TV+ holiday special, but Carey says that wearing the dress made performing far from easy. Carey’s new special, titled “Mariah’s Christmas: The Magic Continues”, premiered on Friday and in it, the star wears a huge floor-length Dolce & Gabbana dress, complete with a dramatic neckline, thigh-high slit, and a long train. But it was the weight of the dress that had Carey’s attention.

Carey spoke to Vogue’s Christian Allaire about the event. Carey said in the interview that the dress must have weighed roughly 60 pounds and it took 6 men just to carry the train.

“The beading is not your average beading. The stones themselves were gigantic, but they still looked beautiful and shined,” she told Allaire. “It was magnificent, but it hurt like a mother to wear it”.

Insider spoke to Carey’s stylist, DiAndre Tristan, who told them that it took over 200 hours to create the base of the dress and roughly 250 hours to bead it with hundreds of Swarovski crystals.

“Everybody was like, ‘Oh, she’s exaggerating,’ until they held it for two seconds,” Carey said to Vogue.

Carey added that it wasn’t just the weight of the dress that provided a challenge, but also the tightness of it:  “When something’s super tight in the middle area, it’s hard because you have to get your breath and sing,” she said. “But I’m used to that.”

“She was a trooper,” said Tristan to Insider. “She did take after take.”

Carey has become synonymous with the holiday season thanks to her Christmas-themed album, “Merry Christmas”. This special was a celebration of her connection to the holiday and it was important to herself and Tristan that they appropriately be vintage-inspired, much like her album.

“It went with the backdrop of New York and the Chrysler Building. It has a bronze, gold, copper feel that’s very festive, but not in your face,” Carey told Vogue.
