Road Trips in America

Oct 23, 2022 ByAndrew Parker

The United States of America is known for being the most accessible country to explore by car. Like no other country, you will find extraordinary places and experiences in the United States. You will be surprised how much the country can change as you explore first one coast, then the other, and then north or south on the best road trips in the US. Here are a few places you can explore on a road trip in America. US Highway 66, or Route 66, is one of the most famous roads in the United States and the best road trip roundup. It starts in downtown Chicago and runs across the country to the Santa Monica pier, spanning eight states and nearly 2500 miles. The historic highway is marked with splashes of American kitsch and classics from a bygone era.

If you are in the mood for a quiet and fantastic ride, head to the Blue Ridge Parkway, where the speed limit is 45 mph. The 469-mile route crosses the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina, connecting Shenandoah and the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Spend time at North Carolina’s Mount Pisgah, known for its widespread network of hiking trails and the famous 1919 Pisgah hotel. To see the first leaves, visit in autumn when the foliage explodes into a dazzling display of purple, brown, and gold leaves.

Originally built to promote tourism and encourage people to visit America’s national parks, the Going to the Sun road has served its purpose since its completion. The 50-mile trail runs through Montana’s Glacier National Park, winds through the Rocky Mountains, and across the Continental Divide at Logan Pass. It has a spacious observation deck, grazing mountain goats, and rainbow-colored wildflower meadows. Watch out for blind turns and dramatic drops, and avoid them in winter months when snow banks can reach 80 feet deep. Plan a summer break at Logan Pass.
